The Glob Theater Is Getting a Randy Newman Song, Which Feels Exactly Right

Disney’s 2027 Monstropolis opening will bring Welcome to Monstropolis to the former Muppet*Vision theater, while the door coaster follows later.

Hollywood Studios’ former Muppet*Vision 3D theater is becoming The Glob Theater, where Welcome to Monstropolis will open with Monstropolis in 2027.

Mike and Sulley will host the show during the city’s H.U.M.A.N. Day celebration. Sulley has a small, earnest presentation planned; Mike has ideas about making it bigger. There are worse ways for a new theater show to begin than with those two having a production meeting.

The very good Disney detail is the song. Randy Newman wrote “Welcome to Monstropolis,” his first song composed exclusively for a Disney theme park. That gives The Glob Theater a real Pixar pulse before anyone has seen the finished show. We will take a new Randy Newman theme over an announcement that merely promises “immersive” things happening in a room.

Monstropolis is also expected to include Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, Scareporium, and Harryhausen’s restaurant. The latter is the sort of recognizably specific Monsters, Inc. choice that makes a new land feel like an actual place instead of a collection of branded nouns.

One limit belongs right beside all that: the door coaster will not open with Monstropolis. Disney has described a future factory ride that takes guests through the door chase and lifts them 40 feet in four seconds, but has not named its opening date. The Glob Theater is a 2027 plan. The coaster is still waiting for its own invitation.
